British Airways

May 24, 2024

British Airways, one of the world’s leading global premium airlines operating out of Glasgow Airport, were seeking to enhance the working environment for its staff.

British Airways commissioned a renovation project through Mitie Facilities Management for its staff lounge situated within Glasgow Airport. The aim was to create a modern, comfortable, and functional space that promotes productivity and well-being for its employees.

The Brief.

The project encompassed a comprehensive overhaul of the British Airways staff lounge, including:

Internal Decoration.

Revamping the walls with a fresh coat of paint and decorative accents to align with the airline’s corporate branding and create a vibrant atmosphere conducive to work and relaxation.

Flooring.
Upgrading the flooring with a combination of carpet tiles and vinyl flooring to enhance durability, aesthetics, and ease of maintenance in high-traffic areas.

Lighting.
Installing energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures strategically to optimise illumination levels, minimise glare, and create a welcoming ambiance throughout the lounge.

Blinds.
Fitting custom blinds to control natural light and ensure privacy, offering staff members the flexibility to adjust lighting conditions according to their preferences and task requirements.

Kitchen.
Installing a stylish and practical splashback in the lounge’s kitchen area to protect the walls from splashes and stains while adding a decorative element that complements the overall design scheme.

Furniture Removal and Recycling.
Responsibly disposing of the existing furniture and fixtures, adhering to sustainable practices by recycling materials wherever possible to minimise environmental impact.

New Furniture Installation.
Procuring and installing breakout furniture, including mixed height seating areas, grid storage system, privacy booths and a pool table with acoustic hanging panels, all designed to optimise comfort, functionality, and space utilisation.

The Journey.

The project commenced with a detailed assessment of the lounge space and collaborative consultations with British Airways stakeholders to understand their specific requirements, preferences, and budgetary considerations. A comprehensive project plan was developed, outlining timelines, resource allocation, and quality assurance protocols.

Skilled craftsmen and technicians were deployed to execute the renovation works systematically, adhering to industry standards and safety regulations. The installation of new flooring involved meticulous measurements, preparation of subfloors, and precise fitting of carpet tiles and vinyl flooring to ensure a seamless finish.

Experienced decorators applied premium quality paints and finishes to the walls, incorporating brand colours and design motifs to create a cohesive aesthetic that reflects British Airways’ corporate identity.

The lighting specialists orchestrated the installation of LED fixtures, optimising placement and intensity levels to achieve uniform illumination and energy efficiency, while the blinds and splashback were custom-fitted to the lounge’s dimensions and design specifications.

Upon completion of the renovation works, the old furniture and fixtures were responsibly dismantled, removed, and transported for recycling or disposal in accordance with environmental guidelines.

The installation of new furniture was meticulously coordinated to minimise disruption to ongoing operations, with the team ensuring precise assembly, placement, and alignment of each piece to maximise functionality and comfort for British Airways staff.

Completion.

The revitalised British Airways staff lounge at Glasgow Airport now exudes a contemporary ambiance that combines style with functionality, offering employees a rejuvenated workspace conducive to productivity, collaboration, and relaxation.

The integration of modern interior elements, from refreshed wall finishes to upgraded flooring and lighting solutions, has transformed the lounge into a dynamic and inviting environment that aligns with British Airways’ brand ethos and enhances the overall employee experience.

By investing in sustainable practices and ergonomic furniture solutions, British Airways has not only elevated the aesthetic appeal and functionality of its staff lounge but also demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship and employee well-being.

The successful completion of the renovation project underscores British Airways’ dedication to providing its staff with best-in-class amenities and workspaces that foster creativity, engagement, and satisfaction in the fast-paced aviation industry.

Strategic planning and collaboration are essential for executing complex renovation projects within strict timelines and budgetary constraints. Incorporating sustainable practices, such as furniture recycling and energy-efficient lighting, aligns with corporate social responsibility goals and enhances brand reputation. Prioritising employee comfort and well-being through a variety of zones and thoughtful design choices contributes to a positive work culture and higher productivity levels.
